Third Man Records has announced the first-ever live anthology from Ann Arbor, Michigan, noise rock icons Laughing Hyenas, titled That Girl – Live Recordings 1986–1994. The release documents the band’s raw, unfiltered power across eighteen tracks drawn from nearly a decade of live performances.

Arriving digitally and on two-LP colored vinyl—with a limited-edition seven-inch—That Girl – Live Recordings 1986–1994 will be released Friday, February 20. Pre-orders and pre-saves are available now.

Compiled personally by founding member John Brannon, the anthology was sourced directly from his private archive of cassette tapes, preserving the band’s live intensity in its most immediate form. The recordings were later transferred, mixed, and mastered by GRAMMY® Award–winning producer Bobby Emmett, known for his work with Sturgill Simpson, Jack White, and The Sights.

The announcement is accompanied by the premiere of “Here We Go Again (WNYU Radio, NYC, 1990),” a standout performance recorded during a college radio session that captures the band at full throttle.

If any band’s legacy demanded a live document, it was Laughing Hyenas. Emerging from Detroit’s Cass Corridor punk and hardcore scene in the early nineteen eighties, the group—featuring John Brannon (Negative Approach), Larissa Strickland (L-Seven), bassist Kevin Strickland, and drummer Jim Kimball, later joined by Ron Sakowski and Todd Swalla—pushed aggressive rock into darker, more volatile territory.

Drawing influence from The Birthday Party, Funhouse-era Stooges, and early blues and jazz, Laughing Hyenas forged a sound built on hypnotic bass lines, tribal swing, slicing guitar work, and Brannon’s unmistakable howl. While the band released three LPs along with multiple singles and EPs, many of which Third Man Records reissued in 2028, their reputation was cemented onstage.

As Wolf Eyes’ Aaron Dilloway famously stated, “The Laughing Hyenas were the scariest band I have ever seen.” Their relentless touring schedule included headline runs, tours with Sonic Youth and Killdozer, and countless college radio performances across the United States—settings where the band’s full force was best experienced.

That Girl – Live Recordings 1986–1994 stands as a long-overdue testament to that reputation, preserving the band’s confrontational energy and uncompromising sonic assault in real time.
