The NFL flag football Australia initiative is expanding nationwide, with the league announcing it will provide free flag football kits to schools across the country.

The program is designed to remove barriers to entry and grow participation at the grassroots level, starting with Queensland and Victoria before rolling out more broadly. It builds on several years of steady growth for the sport across Australia.

Each participating school will receive a kit that includes 12 flag belts, three footballs, and access to NFL Flag curriculum resources. The goal is simple: make it easier for schools to introduce the sport without needing to invest heavily upfront.

The announcement came during a youth clinic on the Gold Coast, where more than 400 students took part alongside international and Australian players. It’s part of a broader push to make flag football more visible and accessible, especially among younger audiences.

Participation numbers already show that momentum. What began as a pilot program in 2022 has grown to more than 500 schools and close to 100,000 students competing in flag football programs across the country.

The timing isn’t accidental. Flag football is set to debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and the NFL has been steadily investing in its international growth as a result. Australia has become one of the league’s key markets in that strategy.

Beyond youth participation, the league has been increasing its presence across the region with new programs, academies, and events, including the upcoming first-ever regular-season NFL game in Melbourne later this year.

For now, the focus is on schools, access, and giving more students the chance to actually play the game rather than just watch it.
