Ysé introduces Pour ce qui nous attend de mieux during a stripped-back showcase in Paris

On Thursday evening, just a few hours before the album’s official release, we were invited to Ysé’s release party showcase at the record store Ground Zero in Paris.

Ysé is a French singer-songwriter. While she has released a few singles and EPs since 2022, Pour ce qui nous attend de mieux is her first album. With 10 songs, this project offers an intimate glimpse into her inner world, unfolding as a deeply personal and emotionally powerful body of work.

For 30 minutes, she performed a selection of tracks from the album in stripped-down solo piano and guitar arrangements. It was a beautiful way to discover the record, making the experience even more intimate.

The album explores a breakup, but it is not your typical heartbreak record. It focuses on the aftermath, moving through hope, emptiness, and self-reconstruction. She shared, “I didn’t want to write an album about sadness, but rather about what happens after, and even within it, the joyful moments. I wanted to make something fun and bright… but still with some sad songs, because I love that,” she laughed.

She also gave us some insight into specific tracks. About “Je te cherche partout,” she explained that she wrote it before starting the album. She used to perform it live without knowing if it would make the final tracklist, but due to audience demand, she decided to include it. The song works as a short interlude, with a very intimate vocal production recorded simply on her iPhone, giving it the feel of a live moment.

Her track “Il neige sur la mer” was inspired by the famous French navigator Éric Tabarly and his boat Pen Duick. He died at sea the day before she was born, and Ysé felt a strange connection to him. This song acts as a tribute.

Discovering the album on streaming platforms, after hearing it live, makes it even more special. My personal favorite is “Les choses simples,” where, in the chorus, she does not sing but speaks. It feels like she is having a direct conversation with us. She lists things she loves, from cooking spicy food to sitting on a bench, eating chocolate cake, to not being straight.

At the end of this song, she shares something particularly meaningful. She explains that the final track on albums has always been her favorite, as it serves as a conclusion to everything that came before. This idea shaped the closing track, which also gives the album its title, “Pour ce qui nous attend de mieux.” During the live performance, she revealed an additional detail. At the very end of this final song, her mother, who happens to be a lyric vocalist, joins her, and the album closes with her voice. Ysé was visibly emotional while explaining this collaboration. What might seem like a small detail to some felt deeply healing for her.

Experiencing Pour ce qui nous attend de mieux in this setting made the album resonate even more. What could have simply been a debut record instead feels like a sincere and carefully crafted introduction to Ysé’s world, balancing vulnerability and light with a quiet strength.
