On May 8, 2026, alternative indie artist Devon Thompson released her new single “Pillory,” and when you think of that word, if you have knowledge of historical devices, you know it is a punishment tool used for public humiliation. “Pillory” is not about that type of punishment, but instead represents how being a woman in this world can feel like a punishment in a different way. Women are constantly looking over their shoulders during the day and night to make sure dark shadows are not following them. We are in constant fear, and I believe that is a horrible punishment for us: fear.
Devon Thompson’s vocals are ethereal with a tint of texture behind them that enhances the atmospheric tone the artist sets in the single. “Pillory” is a cinematic single that adds psychological tension, which blends well with the vulnerability aspect. Within the single, Thompson brings us on a journey of what can be lurking in the darkness, and that is where the tension lies and what causes that fear.
“‘Pillory’ is about perpetually feeling that something is following you. The intangible “thing” that is hunting you. Whether it be time or an actual person stalking you, something is always right behind you. For me, and for many women, it’s the constant feeling of having to look over my shoulder when I walk down the street.” – Devon Thompson
