Ben Champion of Unburier talks ‘As Time Awaits’

Formed in the south of England in the summer of 2022, Unburier is rewriting what it means to be a death metal band, with an emphasis on blending the new and old school stylings, while also splashing some technicality in their songs. Toss in some trash, and the recipe is complete. Now, only a scant four years in the scene, they are continuing to build a name for themselves, and another new album to show for it.

“We feel great!” explains vocalist/guitarist Ben Champion. “We worked really hard on this. We had a slight lineup change, and I think that only improved things. This is our most concise effort as far as we are concerned. We are getting closer and closer to capturing our vision, and we are really stoked about that. The reception has been great, and that’s all we can ask for! The songs have been going down really well live, which is also a positive. It makes us really excited for what’s next.”

Champion shares that lyrically, the album follows themes of absurdism, religion, and self-reflection. Sonically, the band has always been riff first; as he and guitarist/vocalist Blake Hibberd form the skeleton of the song, and then agonize over the structure until they’re happy. With As Time Awaits, they ventured deeper into death metal, channeling bands like Death, Necrophagist, and Revocation

“Those sorts of influences have always been there for us, but as time goes on, we have ramped up the death metal. I think it’s mostly a subconscious thing; we have never sat down and said we want to be more death metal. It’s just naturally progressed that way. The music we write reflects the things we love, so our influences will always seep through.”

It’s been a resounding release, and the sky is the limit for Unburier – primed for a U.K. tour in June with Cryptic Shift and a full-length record on the horizon. It’s hard to imagine it’s been such a short time since they emerged, but it’s been quite a lovely ride thus far. Champion is happy to see how far they’ve come.

“It’s been great; we are really proud of what we have achieved as a band so far. We’ve had our ups and downs for sure, but the main lesson learned is resilience and not losing sight of our goals. I’m most proud of As Time Awaits; I think it’s our best offering to date.”
