Alt-pop duo Daisy Grenade released their debut EP earlier this month, and it definitely has a lot to say. They share that this collection of songs really emphasizes their truest sound of who they are and wanted to be as expressive of themselves as possible without holding anything back. I have witnessed this dynamic pair on stage, and the amount of energy that comes off from their live performance is so undeniable and contagious. Together, they work the crowd and each other, giving the audience a raw, authentic, and high-momentum time of music.
The EP’s playfocus track is titled “Emily,” which explores themes that stem from relationships between women, examining the fine line between envy and obsession. This is specifically highlighted in the line “do I want to be her or do I want to be with her?” and I think it also comes out during the lyric “I can’t believe what you do to me.” These lines really dwell deep on the idea of being envious of someone, but then the obsession that might surface of wanting to be with them because of how you feel around them. The catchy, melodious sound that intertwines with the riffs makes this an infectious bop. I do think the intro of it sounds like a letter opening with “Dear Emily,” it gives it another layer of depth, of uncomfortable feelings on tiptoeing around the envy obsession contrast.
I especially love the track “It Must Be Me,” and how it starts off with this voicemail. These two really know how to create this hauntingly beautiful magic in words that makes one feel so still. The vocals in this one are so soft, and there’s still this powerful feeling in every word being sung. There’s also almost a solemn sadness throughout this song as it sounds like they are blaming themselves for the things that happen. But it also could be a letter to oneself about their inner thoughts. The line, “Why can’t you let me be? It must be me,” has so much that could be interpreted in, and it’s crazy how much depth it really creates.
“So Much To Say” really is that; it’s Daisy Grenade telling us everything, but there is so much more that could be said that isn’t. This EP is nothing short of beauty and storytelling from these two — I am absolutely in love with it all. They are currently on their headline tour for another few weeks, don’t miss out on a high-energy show from them and grab a ticket.
