On June 2, the psychedelic rock powerhouse tour “Claypool Gold” rolled through Cleveland, Ohio. Making a stop at Jacobs Pavilion, the tour’s three acts, Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade, The Lennon Claypool Delirium, and Primus, offered fans a dive into the mind and different eras of legendary bassist Les Claypool.
Starting off the night was Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade. Originally formed during Primus’ hiatus in 2000, the band has returned to open the night. The current lineup consists of Les Claypool on bass, Sean Lennon on guitar, Paulo Baldi on drums, Harry Waters on keys, Skerik on saxophone, and Mike Dillon on percussion. Playing through a four-song set, the Frog Brigade performed “Up on the Roof,” “Phantom Patriot” – a Les Claypool solo track – “Precipitation” – originally by Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel – and closed with “D’s Diner.” As the final notes of “D’s Diner” rang out across the venue, the band exited the stage while a video played in the background, setting up the transition into The Lennon Claypool Delirium set.
As the video continued, Paulo Baldi, Sean Lennon, and Les Claypool made their way back to the stage to begin the second act of the evening. For this set, Sean stepped further into the spotlight as he and Les shared vocal duties throughout the performance. The duo opened with “Blood and Rockets” and “South of Reality,” the title track from their 2019 album. They then moved into some of their more recent material with “WAP (What a Predicament),” “Troll Bait,” and “Meat Machines,” which featured Mike Dillon returning to the stage to provide additional percussion. To close the set, the band performed “Astronomy Domine,” a cover from Pink Floyd‘s debut album, fittingly paying tribute to one of the bands Les Claypool has often cited as a major influence on his music.
Finally, the stage was set for the night’s final act: the legendary Primus. As the lights dimmed, a video played on the backdrop featuring friends of Les Claypool sharing stories about their experiences with him and reflecting on Primus’ rise over the years. As the video came to an end, the band took the stage and ripped straight into “To Defy the Laws of Tradition,” a tour debut, followed by “Fisticuffs.” Across a 12-song set, Primus worked through fan favorites such as “Frizzle Fry,” “My Name Is Mud,” and “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver,” while also showcasing newer material with “The Ol’ Grizz” from their latest release. During “The Ol’ Diamondback Sturgeon (Fisherman’s Chronicles, Part 3),” both Skerik and Mike Dillon returned to the stage to lend their talents to the performance. For the encore, Primus delivered another tour debut with “Pudding Time” before bringing members from the other acts back onstage to help close out the evening with “Southbound Pachyderm,” ending a night that celebrated the many musical worlds of Les Claypool.
