Grammy award-winning and Austin local Ruthie Foster filled the historic Paramount Theater with feel-good blues music on June 12, which marked the start of her 2026 tour. The evening served as a beautiful tribute to legacy, as it is one of the final performances before the venue closes on Monday for its first major renovation in 50 years, a fitting stage for the celebrated resident who has a star on the sidewalk in front of the venue. Originally starting her career in 1977, Foster has released 27 albums, singles, remixes, and EPs over the years. It’s safe to say she is not new to the scene, and her timeless, powerful voice proved why she is a master of her craft.

The night was centered around heartwarming storytelling and genuine vulnerability. Between playing a cover of “That’s All Right” and setting aside her guitar for “Tangled,” Foster spoke directly to the crowd, sharing how her roots in gospel music shaped her. She humorously admitted that as a child, she felt she couldn’t sing as well as the other gospel powerhouses in her family, so she took up playing the piano instead. In a deeply touching moment, one of her background singers, who is also her cousin, shared that she does what she does because Ruthie has been her lifelong motivation, moving Foster to tears on stage.

The setlist included songs ranging from her early catalog to her latest album, which was released under Sun Records and won a Grammy. Throughout the show, Foster revealed stories behind her music, from the early-morning promotional talk shows to the recording of the song “Mileage” about life on the road. The highlight of the night occurred when Foster acknowledged National Women Veterans Day. As a Navy veteran herself, she sat center stage while her head was being wrapped in a traditional headpiece. After giving an emotional speech about service, strength, and the meaning behind headpieces, she gave a stunning performance of “Phenomenal Woman,” bringing the theater to its feet for a standing ovation. It was a special evening, and I highly recommend catching her show if you get the chance.
