Brenn! embraces being ‘AMATEUR AT BEST’ on his debut record

Amateur At Best Brenn!

Batter up! Brenn! is stepping up to the plate with his debut album AMATEUR AT BEST, and the title isn’t intended to only feel cinematic – it’s a reflection of the exact process, the state of mind, Brenn! approaches this era of music with: “I think [the title] translates into every area and aspect of my life, where it’s almost like a sense of pride, where you can say, ‘oh, I’m not good enough, so I don’t have to keep getting better, so I can go on to the next thing.’ So I think the term ‘AMATEUR AT BEST’ just kind of encompasses this whole season of life I wrote this album about.” It’s not a record about having everything mapped out or knowing exactly where you belong on the field; it’s an album about admitting you’re imperfect and still finding peace in the fact that meaning exists even when the scoreboard isn’t clear.

Brenn!’s story begins in a pocket of Nashville, Tennessee, “a year after COVID,” but the roots stretch much deeper, back to a family home where music drifted through the hallways naturally: “my brother is a big musician… I just wanted something new to do, so I started doing it. And it kind of took off suddenly.” For someone who candidly admits, “I’m OK at everything, but I’m not great at anything,” music seemed to arrive like a pitch right over the middle of the plate. By the time Brenn! was “17, going on 18,” his songs had begun reaching audiences far beyond anything he imagined from his bedroom.

When Brenn! reflects on his influences, you can hear the fingerprints they’ve left across his debut record specifically. “I listened to a lot of keshi growing up… and versace.” It wasn’t just the melodies that lingered. Brenn! turns further inward: “[keshi] kind of did a lot of production stuff that was really cool. That’s actually why I started getting into production.” On the new record, Brenn! adjusts his cap and fully embraces the role of producer, but that transition didn’t come effortlessly. He admits production was intimidating: “I didn’t really know how to produce until I started this album, so learning how to produce was the hardest part,” though much of that anxiety stemmed from perfectionism – “it’s got to sound good. All my other stuff is done professionally, so it has to meet the standard of what’s already put out.” Despite the pressure he placed on himself, Brenn! proudly notes, “I’m very proud to say that I’ve completed my goal with accuracy to the best of my ability,” and the statement circles perfectly back when he says, “everything about this album was AMATEUR AT BEST.”

The title itself, AMATEUR AT BEST, arrived unexpectedly and stuck like honey. “I was in the bathroom in Columbus, and I just thought of it. And I was like, I’m AMATEUR AT BEST, but that’d be a great song title name. So I put that in my notes and then it kind of just snowballed from there.” Some records discover their themes after the songs are written, but for Brenn!< the concept was standing on deck long before the music stepped up to bat. “The name definitely came first. I actually kind of, on a whiteboard, I just wrote AMATEUR AT BEST, and then drew a big line under it. And then I just wrote down all the other names of the songs before they even existed.” It’s a testament to the level of intention behind the project and his ability to construct a narrative long before the final inning arrives.

The record leans heavily into baseball motifs, and while it requires dedication to keep returning to a specific image, Brenn! admits there wasn’t necessarily a grander meaning attached to it. Instead, it became a vehicle for the nostalgia he hoped to capture within the soundscapes. “I just think everyone likes baseball,” he says simply. “It’s like an all-American… aesthetic.” That imagery expands into the album cover itself: “a baseball field, some guy in some casual clothing just swinging the bat,” and that’s precisely where Brenn! hopes the music carries listeners. “Just very hometown,” as he puts it. The kind of place where summer feels endless, the grass is freshly cut, and the stadium lights are still glowing long after the game’s already over.

The message itself is uncomplicated. Brenn! isn’t chasing revolution, and he turns outward when he explains, “I want people to take away what they want to take away from it, what naturally comes out of the sound to them. I want that above all else.” Yet beneath the clean production and emotional candour sits something far more universal: “If you were to take one thing away from this, it’s like, I think we all just feel ill-prepared about everything. I think that’s a common theme that people don’t talk about enough, is how inadequate people feel for everything they do.” Brenn! offers another perspective when he adds, “There’s never a good time. And there’s never anyone who’s think they got it figured out.” It may initially sound discouraging, but there’s comfort tucked inside that realization. Not everyone knows the next play. Not everyone has the game figured out. Sometimes you’re simply stepping into the batter’s box and hoping for your best swing. Above all else, it’s okay to be AMATEUR AT BEST.

If you’re searching for a soundtrack to summertime introspection, Brenn!’s debut album arrives at exactly the right moment, and “Rookie Of The Year (ROTY)” feels like the perfect opening pitch. Even so, he assures, “Anytime is a good time for a Brenn! song.” AMATEUR AT BEST is available now on all streaming platforms and arrives alongside an expansive European and North American headline tour beginning this fall. Don’t miss your chance to step into a story that’s only just entering its first inning.
