Say Anything frontman Max Bemis will close out the summer with three intimate solo Storyteller performances, bringing songs, stories, and fan interaction to Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Nashville later this month.
The upcoming shows are being billed as something different from a traditional acoustic run. Instead, Bemis will blend songs from across his catalog with the stories, inspirations, and strange moments behind them, creating a format that sits somewhere between a concert, a conversation, and a storyteller-style performance.
The idea grew out of the recent relaunch of Bemis’ Song Shop, his long-running fan-focused project built around custom song commissions and personalized creative experiences.
“I recently relaunched my Song Shop with what I thought was going to be a quick, hour-long Instagram Live,” Bemis said. “Instead, we just kept going because I was having too much fun. What I loved wasn’t just playing songs, it was talking about where they came from, what they mean, the weird stories behind writing them, and all the ridiculous and meaningful things that have happened because of them over the years.”
For longtime Say Anything fans, that kind of setting makes sense. Bemis has always been known for writing songs that feel intensely personal, conversational, self-aware, and emotionally direct. A format built around both the songs and the stories behind them gives fans a chance to hear the material in a more intimate setting, with more room for context and interaction.
Bemis said the response to the Song Shop relaunch reminded him how much he had missed that part of performing.
“The conversations and back-and-forth with everyone watching reminded me how much I’d missed that part of performing,” Bemis said. “That inspired these shows. They’re really an excuse to play songs and tell way too many stories. I’ve got songs, but I’ve definitely got even more stories. We’ll see how it goes with these three shows and if we all survive, maybe there’ll be more.”
The three end-of-summer dates begin August 28 at Cherry Street Tavern in Chattanooga, followed by August 29 at The Masquerade in Atlanta and August 30 at The End in Nashville.
