To celebrate the 10th anniversary of “La La Land,” composer Justin Hurwitz has given “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme” – one of the most beloved and universally recognisable leitmotifs in modern film music – a subtle new reimagining. Released now via Interscope Records, the updated piano piece was designed for moments of relaxation, reflection and focus, something fans have actually been requesting for years. Listen to “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme (10th Anniversary Version)” HERE and go HERE to see Hurwitz perform and break down the revitalised version.

First released in 2016, the “La La Land” soundtrack and score have each racked up over 3 billion streams on Spotify individually, while “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme” alone has amassed over 300 million streams. The short but unforgettable piece, variations of which appear throughout the film, is a dreamy blend of hope and yearning – a little sweet, a little pained and so deeply warm.
The film version builds to a dazzling jazz run that closes in a highly dramatic fashion, but as Hurwitz explains in his walk-through video, he’s long wanted a version better suited to everyday listening, or as he puts it, “for parents who’ve lamented that they can’t play it for their babies.” “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme (10th Anniversary Version)” swells in the middle before returning to that timeless melody, finally giving the song, and its fans, the lullaby ending they’ve always deserved.
“I’ve spent the last 10 years wishing we had recorded a version of ‘Mia & Sebastian’s Theme’ without the crazy jazz part for people who are in the mood to relax. It was exciting to go back into the studio and make this new version, which I hope people enjoy,” says Hurwitz.
The new music arrives as part of a wave of celebrations marking “La La Land’s” 10th anniversary. The film returned to AMC theatres nationwide in the United States on August 16, in breathtaking Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos immersive audio for the first time, bringing one of the decade’s most beloved films back to the big screen and introducing its music to a new generation of listeners.
Beyond the new release, the immersive “La La Land In Concert” experience keeps touring the globe, with performances scheduled well into 2027, pairing screenings of the film with live orchestras and jazz ensembles performing the film’s cherished score. Hurwitz led a special 10th anniversary performance at Los Angeles’ open-air Greek Theatre on August 1, and has a Venice Film Festival performance also coming up in September. Remaining dates include London’s Royal Albert Hall, Tokyo, Mexico City, and San Francisco, among others. Tickets and info HERE.
For his part, Hurwitz stands as one of modern cinema’s most acclaimed composers. He has earned two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, and a BAFTA, among other honours, for his work on “La La Land,” Whiplash, First Man, and Babylon. His body of work continues to strike a chord globally, amassing billions of streams to date.
