The story behind Get Out Alive

Chas Huff has been in the music scene for years, working with other bands, and after a fallout in friendships, he decided it was time to pursue music full-time as a solo artist, which led to the creation of Get Out Alive. He spent a lot of time in isolation, which pushed him to really listen to his favorite artists and think about it, particularly Three Days Grace. A track by them that has personally cemented him is “Get Out Alive,” and thus the name of his solo project was found.

He recalls how music has been ingrained in his life for as long as he can remember. He says, “His mom was always playing music in the car like Godsmack and Three Days Grace. There’s VHS tapes somewhere of him in Spider-Man undies banging on drums. Music has always been a part of me.” The fact that he remembers these moments from so long ago and how it’s driven him to be where he is now is amazing. I know I have some core events from growing up that I know define how I preserve things in life. I especially love how he has this beautiful relationship with his mother, as he spoke very highly of her — she was a big inspiration in his journey as an artist. His songwriting process is intricate and has involved a lot of experimenting to discover his sound. I asked how he’d think about reworking past tracks to fit his current vibes, and Huff said, “Writing more songs really pushes you to get better and solidify your sound. Looking back, I know I had the idea, but the execution wasn’t really set up, and maybe I’d go back to reproduce them now knowing what I wanted it to sound like.”

Now he currently only has a few tracks out, but “If I Leave” would be the track he’d want to tell people to listen to first.  He shares, “There’s a lot of dynamic to it, and the other songs push on the heavier territory side. ‘If I Leave’ is an easier listen and more relatable lyrically. This was also the first song I wrote for Get Out Alive. It was at the beginning stage when the friendship imploded, and it’s emotionally hard as it’s about feeling like giving up with a sense of low worth in the world. The idea of the song being ‘If I left, would I even be missed?’”

The song hits so hard, and it really is something I know I’ve wondered about while growing up. I didn’t always feel particularly wanted by anyone, romantically and in friendships; sometimes the voice in my head still says that. I feel FOMO from seeing people post group adventures, and I’m waiting for people to text me back, thinking they want nothing to do with me. But sometimes that’s okay because even though we are meant to be social creatures, alone time is just as important. Taking oneself out for an adventure can be just as fun, and it’s definitely better than feeling the FOMO emotions on your couch.

Now, being a newer project, Huff is still hard at work finalizing a live band sound as he works with others, tightening those final screws. It may be a while until we see a tour announcement, but he has confirmed that more music is on the way. The confirmation of whether this will evolve into a full band project is not set in stone, as he mentions he’s open to the idea but wants to continue focusing on the present, letting it all happen naturally.

While we wait for more news, go follow him on social media for updates and stream his music on all platforms. I cannot wait to see what else comes from this solo project, and I look forward to what else comes from this project.
