Earlier this week, Haiden Henderson revealed during a 5 Seconds of Summer show that his debut album bleach will arrive October 3. He followed the announcement with another taste of the record, releasing his new single “i wanna be your girl.”
Haiden Henderson is currently introducing himself to arenas across North America after exploring the United Kingdom as one of the support acts for 5 Seconds of Summer, and he is using those stages to kick off his next era.
The song plays with the idea of wanting a level of closeness that goes beyond simply being someone’s boyfriend. Henderson wants the comfortable, unfiltered relationship she might have with her closest girlfriends instead.
“I was raised by a single mom, so I’ve always had a hard time hanging out with other guys,” Henderson explains. “There’s always some sort of an awkwardness that I can’t get around. I thought it would be fun to just lean into that for a song.”
Behind the track is producer Benny Cassette, whose previous credits include SZA, John Legend and Miguel. Together, they turn Henderson’s slightly tongue-in-cheek concept into something that also shows a more intimate side of songwriting.
The single joins “NSFW” and “freak for you” on the upcoming album. Bleach will explore relationships, sex, masculinity and self-discovery while keeping the playful approach Henderson has brought to his recent releases. Following earlier projects “Loverboy” and “Tension,” it will be his first full-length studio album.
Henderson remains on tour with 5 Seconds of Summer. The North American run continues with Salt Lake City on August 26, followed by Mountain View, California on August 28.
Anyone discovering Henderson from the 5SOS “Everyone’s A Star! tour” therefore has plenty more coming their way.
“i wanna be your girl” is available NOW, with bleach following on October 30.
