Alternative-metal band Savage Hands just dropped a new song, and boy, is it a banger!? This deep cut explores the complicated emotions of those wounds that never heal and leave behind a scar. But instead of looking at scars as a chance to move on, this track unravels the threads of choosing to follow that impulse of clinging to the pain further because of the idea that letting go would feel worse. The connection between scars and brokenness is often overlooked, as the idea of keeping attachment to the pain causes more damage, but sometimes wearing them for what they are can offer more empowerment than dismissing them. 

Vocalist Mike Garrow shares, “Be comfortable with everything that makes you, you. The good and bad. Wear your scars because they make you who you are.”

I think enforcing the idea that the dark moments can be super definitive of who you become while interchanging the words “bruise” and “scar” is so hauntingly beautiful. People often want to hide the moments we struggle because we fear judgement, but quite the contrary; it’s the opposite. We look at someone in awe because even with moments of trouble, you chose to keep going and hold your head up. There should be no shame because something you didn’t plan happened; it makes you stronger and gives you a different outlook on life because of it. Bruises and scars are just a small mark that shows you conquered something much bigger than yourself. 

You should be allowed to love all of yourself, bruises and all. I love how the lyrics go, “You know I love it, every single bruise,” because it truly reinforces the feelings of self-love. The tracing of feelings of obsession, beauty, and pain is done so well. Definitely be on the lookout for more to come because Savage Hands are not stopping anytime soon.
