Straight outta Oslo, Norway, Cocktail Slippers are bringing a little bit of the past along for the ride with their newest full-length album, Joyride. Pulling from the attitude of ’70s rock, the five-piece mixes big guitars with pop-hook harmonies for a record that keeps things loud, catchy, and most importantly fun.

Back in 2001, these girls decided to start something new and natural while still keeping pieces of the past close by. Coming together in Oslo, Cocktail Slippers built their sound around the rock n’ roll they grew up on, mixing that older influence with enough of their own personality to make it feel like theirs. More than two decades later, that same idea is still at the center of what they do. It’s an idea that eventually caught the ear of Steven Van Zandt, who signed the band to his Wicked Cool Records label back in 2007. Since then, Cocktail Slippers have continued taking what started in Oslo and pushing it well beyond Norway.

That brings us to Joyride, the band’s newest full-length album. The name isn’t just something that sounded good on the cover either. A lot of this record comes directly from the life Cocktail Slippers have built together — years on the road, long drives, inside jokes, and all of the weird little moments that come with spending that much time together. The title track even puts that feeling front and center, taking the less glamorous parts of being on the road and turning them into something worth celebrating.

The album doesn’t stay completely focused on life on the road either; the track “This Town” takes things back to Oslo, looking at home for what it actually is instead of trying to make it sound perfect. The good, the bad, and everything in between all have a place, while the song “I Still Dream You” slows things down and brings out a more heartfelt side of the band.

Recorded at Propeller Studios in Oslo with engineer Michael Scott Hartung, Joyride feels like another piece of a story Cocktail Slippers started more than 20 years ago. They’ve changed, grown, and covered plenty of miles since then, but the reason behind it all seems to have stayed pretty simple: They’re all still having fun.
