Indie rock duo Tommy Lefroy has shared their latest single, “Angel in the House,” a distorted exploration of expectation and the pressure to fit an idealized role. The track appears on the forthcoming debut album, The Precariat, releasing on October 23 via Thirty Tigers.

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s 1931 essay “Professions for Women,” “Angel in the House” visits Woolf’s metaphor about the self-sacrificing woman whose obligations to others come at the expense of her own ambitions. Tommy Lefroy (Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel) connects Woolf’s ideas to the resurgence of traditional ideals of femininity across social media and culture.

Built around distorted guitar riffs, the song switches between the historical and the contemporary, layering excerpts from Woolf’s Professions for Women. The repeated line, “(I can’t) do away with her,” leaves the Angel lingering even as the song attempts to confront her.

The accompanying music video, co-directed by Mouzourakis and Emmy-nominated artist and photographer Brendon Burton, brings that contrast to life with a stark winter landscape in Saskatchewan. Mouzourakis and Bethel portray two sides of the song’s central tension: the Angel and the “Tommy girl.” Simultaneously loving, haunting, playful, and antagonistic, the Angel follows her counterpart through the frozen landscape as a physical manifestation of the complicated expectations surrounding femininity.

“Angel in the House” follows the previous singles “Thief” and “Slush Puppy” from their upcoming album, The Precariat. Written over six years across Nashville, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Michigan, and London, it takes its title from the economic term describing a growing class of people living with increasing instability.

That literary influence has become very important to Tommy Lefroy’s identity. A recent SPIN feature dubbed the duo “music’s biggest book nerds,” highlighting their tradition of hosting book swaps at shows. Influences ranging from Virginia Woolf and Mary Richardson to economist Guy Standing’s “The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class” become starting points for songs connecting historical struggles with modern anxieties.

Produced by Tommy Lefroy alongside Stephen Sesso, with executive production from Mike Crossey, known for his work with The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, and MUNA, The Precariat ultimately looks to connection and community as an answer to the album’s uncertainty.
