On September 27, Come and Take It Live hosted the “Perfectly Unfamiliar” dual-headlining tour, starring In Her Own Words and Every Avenue alongside openers Neutral Snap and Felicity.
The night kicked off with Neutral Snap, a band from New Orleans, Louisiana, who stated they took the stage early so they could sneak an extra song into their setlist. Blending upbeat pop rock with a sprinkle of screamo, their energetic sound paired with plenty of back-and-forth banter with the crowd made them the perfect opener to get everyone warmed up for the night ahead. An early highlight came when the singer had the room sing along to a part of “I’m Not Double Texting Her.” Between tracks, the band paused for Jameson shots on stage, raising a glass to toast that “there are no ships like friendships” before singing a fun rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” followed by a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”
Following Neutral Snap was Felicity, a band that brought a blend of alternative rock and pop punk to the stage. They kept the momentum going with a set packed full of crowd interaction. At one point, they split the room right down the middle and had everyone run toward each other to trade high-fives. Whenever I’ve seen a crowd split in two, I’m used to seeing it become the wall of death, so it was a cute little addition to a set that made me giggle. They also unrolled a giant scroll on stage and had the crowd read the words out loud after them. Their set was full of great covers too, starting with the intro to “Forever Young” by Alphaville, before launching into their song “Emo Trash,” and later getting the whole room to sing along to “Hey Jude.”
Up next was Every Avenue, and to say I was excited would be an understatement… I hadn’t seen them live since 2012. I started listening to them throughout middle school, around when “Shh. Just Go With It” was released, so being in that room felt like stepping into a time machine, taking me straight back to being a teenager singing along to some of my all-time favorite songs. Taking the stage around 9:30 p.m., the band, originally formed in 2003, was returning to their roots. Frontman David Ryan Strauchman, the lone original member, noted that while their recent runs had been acoustic, this was their first full electric tour since 2024. Knowing this was my first chance to see them since high school, missing this show was simply not an option.
Their setlist had a killer mix of nostalgic classics and fresh material. They leaned heavily into fan favorites from Picture Perfect and their greatest hits, singing songs like “Picture Perfect” and “Where Were You.” Mid-set, they dialed things back for a brief acoustic moment, treating the room to intimate renditions of a few tracks, including “Only Place I Call Home.” They also debuted new music, including “The Wreckage.” At one point, David shared that he had planned to release a country-rock record after their “Bad Habits” album, but it never came to light. He then treated the crowd to “Porchlights,” a song originally intended for that album. They ended on a high note with “Tell Me I’m a Wreck,” when the singer of Neutral Snap came on stage to help sing the end of the song with David.
Last but not least, In Her Own Words ended the night. This is the third time I’ve seen them, and every single time they are so great live. They sang “Unfamiliar” in full, which came out almost 10 years ago, but they also played newer hits like “Sugarcoat,” “I Think It’s Time,” and “Beg For More.” Circle pits formed a few times during the set, and you could tell so many people in that crowd had waited to hear some of those older songs live for years. Overall, this tour was not one to miss!
