Rain couldn’t keep Gainesville away from The Gringos. Taking over Heartwood Soundstage on October 8, the band turned a wet, muddy evening into the kind of show that reminds you exactly why live music is best experienced in a crowd.

Local musician Buboy kicked off the night at Heartwood Soundstage, warming up the crowd before The Gringos took the stage. As a local opener, Buboy helped set the tone for an evening centered around live music and Gainesville’s music scene, giving fans a chance to settle in before the rain-soaked night really got going.

The show arrived at an exciting time for the band, following the September 4 release of their new EP, “Tossing & Turning.” With new music giving fans even more to connect with, the night was another chance to experience The Gringos live.

One of the best parts of the set was the way The Gringos seamlessly blended songs from their new EP with older originals as well as covers. The band worked in covers like Modest Mouse’s “Float On,” Pink Floyd’s “Time,” and Cage the Elephant’s “Come a Little Closer,” bringing familiar songs into a set that still felt distinctly their own. The mix kept the night feeling fresh while giving the crowd plenty of chances to sing along, proving that whether it was new music or a well-loved classic, The Gringos knew how to keep the energy going.

As the set went on, the rain became just another part of the experience. The energy never let up, and when it finally came time for the band to leave the stage, the crowd made it clear they weren’t ready to call it a night. Screams for an encore immediately filled the air, and The Gringos barely made it offstage before turning right back around to give the crowd one more song.

They closed out the set with a cover of “Sex on Fire” by Kings of Leon, the perfect song to bring the night to an end. The opening notes sent the crowd into a frenzy, with fans dancing in the mud puddles and pulling their friends in to join them. For those few minutes, it felt like everyone forgot about the rain, the mud, and the weather altogether, leaving nothing but the music and the moment. The Gringos definitely gave Gainesville a night worth getting soaked (and muddy) for.
