What felt like the first official day of fall in Phoenix, Kacey Musgraves brought her “Middle of Nowhere Tour” to Arizona on October 17. As I walked into the Mortgage Matchup Center, I couldn’t help but notice the number of cowboy hats flooding through the gates. It was sprinkling outside, and a rainbow spread throughout the sky. This weather felt perfectly fitting for the show’s atmosphere.

As ashamed as I am to admit it, I have never attended a country concert before, so this was a brand new experience for me. It was a packed house at Mortgage Matchup, and it was really cool to see such a diverse crowd.

Musgraves opened the show with “Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy” and started the show at the elevated barn-style structure. The crowd was already going crazy, and every person in the venue was on their feet.

From there, she performed songs from her latest album, Middle of Nowhere, her Grammy Award-winning album, Golden Hour, her album star-crossed and some throwbacks from Same Trailer Different Park.

Each song flowed seamlessly into the next, keeping the energy alive throughout the night. Everyone in my section seemed to know every lyric, creating an atmosphere that was impossible not to get engulfed in. My favorite song of the night was “Loneliest Girl.” Although I wasn’t familiar with much of the setlist going into the show, I found myself opening Spotify multiple times throughout the night to save songs to my playlist. Discovering new music in real time is one of my favorite parts of attending concerts, especially when seeing an artist whose discography I haven’t fully explored.

Toward the end of the show, Musgraves shared how happy she was to be back in Phoenix, revealing that she had personally requested an Arizona stop on the tour. She also took a moment to reflect on how meaningful it was to see the tour come to life, expressing her pride in everything she and her team had created.

“Whenever I look out here, I get a great surprise because I really, like, have this vision for this tour that I wanted it to feel like everyone was invited to my hometown and got to come see what it feels like to be in the middle of nowhere.”

Musgraves went on to reflect on the welcoming environment she hoped to create through the tour. “Believe it or not, there’s a lot of people who have never been to the middle of nowhere, and it’s a great place. So whenever I look out and see all of your faces and the diversity and the beauty, I’m like, hell yeah, this is my middle of nowhere and I’m really proud of it.”
