On October 23, girl in red released her brand new EP, titled “BLUE.” With four very personal songs, Marie Ulven, the singer and songwriter known for her indie pop music, comes back with a very raw and intimate project, returning to her roots of creating music. Marie was deeply involved in the making of the tracks, both in the songwriting and production, accompanied by Mathias Tellez, Lucy Healy, Julia Michaels, and mastered by George Tanderø.

While the entire EP seems to talk about a breakup and losing someone, each song has its own particularities.
Her first released single “blue” explores the uncertainty of change and the emotions that follow the journey through it. Marie shared that the track’s melody came to her during a walk with her dog, Luna. It was the first song born, and it inspired this little collection of songs that deserved a distinct project.
“missing person” is a deeply introspective track about recognising why someone left, understanding the mistakes we made, and realising that we can only blame ourselves. Despite this understanding, we still miss them and wish we had done things differently.
“worst case” is the shortest track on the project, running just 1:39 and consisting of a single verse, chorus, and outro. Its subject matter differs from the other songs, focusing not on a breakup but on the beginning of a relationship, exploring how difficult it can be to let someone in and the walls we build to protect ourselves from getting hurt.
On the last track, “clean slate,” she expresses the way our own minds can keep us stuck in place, and how challenging it is to actually break patterns and accept that things have changed. At the end of a relationship, it can be really hard to actually accept it can’t be saved.
These fourth song brought together makes this EP really special, like a little bubble in girl in red’s creative world. After starring as the main character in her first movie “Low Expectations” and the release of “BLUE,” we can only hope we get to see Marie on stage again soon.
