Fans lined up around the block for nine hours to see Steve Lacy… Would you?

Arriving at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre on October 22, the traffic was INSANE. Practically the whole city of Charlotte, North Carolina, was going to see Steve Lacy’s “OH YEAH? Tour.” You could be confused about whether this was a concert… or a Steve Lacy lookalike contest. Fans were dressed in some of Steve’s finest looks. They had on ties, fun sunglasses, the coolest streetwear fits, and even custom-made shirts with his baby pictures on them!

The anticipation began… fans were chanting “STEVE, STEVE, STEVE, STEVE” and even changing the lyrics to his hit song “oh yeah?” From “Come on, come on, come on” to “Come out, come out, come out.” Then smoke rushed off the stage, the lights cut off, and the most vibrant purple color illuminated the venue. Steve’s band members came out one by one, getting in position for an incredible night. Then the crowd went wild as they spotted Steve Lacy’s shadow backstage…

Steve kicked off the “Oh Yeah? Tour” with the hit song “oh yeah?,” of course!! The song takes fans through a raw look at life’s ups and downs, personal growth, and the fear of going through those downs again, setting the tone for the night in a “live in the moment” kind of way. Lacy then interacted with fans in excitement for the support they’ve given him, and let them know the new album, released on July 17, titled Oh Yeah?, he will be playing fully front to back! Transitioning into track two, “is it cool?” (feat. SZA), the first collab project between the two, a personal favorite of mine!

Letting the music take over the room, the connection, the energy, and admiration were like no other. Fans have created tight- knit relationships within the community, a safe space to feel the music. Lacy not only brings fans the best indie- rock, alternative tracks, but has fans tapped deep into their emotions/feels with personal lyrics.

To me, concerts aren’t just about the artists and the music, but it’s who you spend it with. Friends who support each other’s battles, lovers who know the ups and downs, or strangers you find connect to the artist in the same way as you. This was one of those concerts that make you rewrite your story. I was lucky enough to get to experience this show with some other amazing local creatives, sharing laughs and checking off bucket list shows together. Nights like these make me realize how whole I feel while working gigs.
