On October 25, Malcolm Todd performed at Arizona Financial Theatre. This was my third time seeing him: once at a small venue, once on a large festival stage, and now at a headline show. Walking in, it looked like a sea of red, the dress code fans had picked for the night.

54 Ultra opened the show and brought great energy. Known for his songs “Tell Me” and “Talk 2 Me,” the crowd was into his whole set, waving their hands and dancing so hard the barricade shook.

Malcolm came out next and started with the interlude “Jean Skirt” from his newest album, Do That Again. From there he moved through “Breathe,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” and “Free.99” before slowing things down with “Difficult Love.” The crowd sang every word back to him on songs like “Bleed (feat. Omar Apollo)” and “Earrings.”

My favorite song of the night was “Do That Again.” A visual played behind him during the song: a collage of him growing up as a person and as an artist. I think that is part of what draws people to his music. He was just another kid making music in his room and posting it online. It has been incredible to watch him grow and prove he can fill large venues.
