Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and producer Knox brought his Midwest Best tour to The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles for a night of alternative/indie pop and plenty of crowd interaction. With two openers kicking things off with different sounds, the evening offered a little bit of everything.

First to take the stage was Kevian Kraemer, who actually ended up being my personal favorite performance of the night. Bringing youthful energy to the stage, Kraemer delivered a set of catchy indie-pop songs and strong vocals. His stage presence matched his music, and he would consistently interact with his bandmates, keeping the energy up throughout the performance. Paired with some great lighting, it made for a particularly memorable opening set.

Emi Grace hopped on stage next. She brought a much heavier sound to the evening. Blending alternative and hard rock, her set featured very impressive guitar work and an incredible vocal range. While her style wasn’t necessarily my personal favorite, her talent and presence were undeniable. She spent the set running across the stage, climbing onto platforms, and interacting directly with the audience. At one point, she even made her way up to the Fonda’s second level to perform from within the crowd, something I hadn’t seen at the venue before.

Finally, Knox took the stage to an incredibly enthusiastic crowd. His catchy, guitar-driven alternative-pop sound brought to mind artists like COIN and Half•Alive, with strong vocals and plenty of upbeat energy. Playing guitar throughout parts of the set, Knox used the entire stage while interacting with fans across the room. The audience seemed to know almost every lyric, singing along and filling the room.

With his newest sophomore album, My Midwest Best, recently released, Knox brought a sound rooted in the alternative and pop-rock influences he grew up with to a crowd that clearly connected with it. Between three very different performances and an audience that never seemed to run out of energy, the night made for a great stop on his tour.
