BADSQUATCH, the ever-polarizing artist, drops the fourth song off his first album, a double EP consisting of 14 tracks that he describes as a mental health piece. The dark and light contrasts that have been there in the first releases by this new creative are much more present, as this song, “Nakupenda,” almost seems to come from an entirely different universe than the previous single.
The new song “Nakupenda” is a total 180 from the aforementioned track about a gut-wrenching heartbreak with thick guitars and fiery vocals. It begins with the sound of a babbling brook before sliding into slow, beautifully meticulous acoustic chords that transition into the gentle but warm and inviting vocals of BADSQUATCH. The title of the song, the Swahili phrasing for “I love you,” is confirmed to be a sort of title track of the I LUV YOU side of the album, but it is also a nod to the African-inspired percussion instrumentation and lyrical themes of flowing with the river toward the ocean, which the artist has mentioned to be further inspired by stories of the Nile River.
These lyrical themes in this song set this single even further apart from the rest of his recent releases, speaking with an air of wisdom that can only come from somebody who has experience with not just pain and suffering, but also the coming to terms with it, the process of ‘healing’, and moving forward in life. The concepts of the song combine very well with the calm, inviting, and disarming instrumentation that is provided to us, while metaphors and thought-provoking phrases point toward a search for peace.
BADSQUATCH has now given us four totally different looks as an artist with this acoustic single: an industrial anthem about self-loathing, then an ’80s dance/workout song about moving your body, and most recently a gritty and gut-wrenching song painting a picture of the moment your heart breaks. Now we get to experience this audio journey down a river of gratitude and healing. Sasquatch legend, BADSQUATCH’s future move appears to be a complete mystery.
