Get Out Alive is a solo project backed by Chas Huff who is no stranger to the music world. If you recall, I actually had the pleasure of interviewing him not too long ago. He had teased a few singles but now the official full-length seven track EP has been released across all streaming platforms.
Huff mentioned in the interview that he felt the track, “If I Leave” was one of the most important listens but with the whole project out, I personally think that the titular song, “Saint Of The Dark,” requires the first listen. While “If I Leave” pushes through the darkness exposing the idea behind the question we all ask ourselves about who’d remember me if I left, I can’t help but really think about what he has to say about the EP and its title meaning. The EP revolves around the feelings and topics amongst mental health while exploring one’s faith to navigate through the emotions. Huff discusses how the title, “Saint Of The Dark” connects with Carl Jung’s theory about shadows and about how there’s a need in virtue to embrace some of the dark instead of just running away from it. You must be able to accept that there is a risk of causing upset in order to face the truth, your reality. Similarly with the track that shares the title, it’s a back and forth battle between virtue and pleasure, desperately trying to hold onto what you have leaning into this intense ballad for oneself.
I am a big fan of this EP but I think my personal favorite one has been “Shiver.” Something about how the intro kicks in paired with these melodic sounds in the lyrics. The overall production and the strong lead with drums grabbed me instantly and the echo twinge in the vocals. All of the tracks are good listens but something about “Shiver” clung to me and definitely sent some shivers up my arms from the first listen.
I know I am hoping for some live shows soon. I wish I lived closer to where Get Out Alive was based out of because he did make his first live debut with a band on September 25. Hopefully that means a full tour is getting ready to take off and you bet I am going to try to make it out for a show.
